Quins Advance to Club 7’s National Championship

The Harlequins Sevens Team traveled to the Princess Anne Sports Complex in Norfolk, VA this weekend to compete in the Mid-Atlantic Seven’s Championship. In crossover play the Harlequins fell early to Kutztown, a strong side that left the team without one of their starters through an early injury.

Regrouping and shuffling players, the Quins then found their stride against Wilmington, downing the Delaware team 34-14 with strong defensive tackling and good stamina throughout. Mike Wilk ended the game with a possible wrist fracture, adding to the shuffling for the final pool play match against Schuylkill River.

Schuylkill has been a challenge for the Quins all season, and they showed up to play today as well. A very strong team had the Quins outmatched from the outset, but the earlier win saw theQuins moving to the semi-finals at 3:00pm.

The semi final game pitted the Quins against the same Kutztown team that gave them a hard time early in the day. Good play from the young Harlequins from both the University of Pittsburgh and California University of Pennsylvania upended the team from Kutztown 19-14.

The win put the Harlequins in the Championship final against Schuylkill River RFC. The Harlequins scored a converted try early on the Exiles putting them up 7-0 with 2 min to go in the half. The Exiles won the ensuing kickoff and scored a converted try to bring the score to 7-7 at the half. The second half saw excellent defensive stands from both sides with the Exiles the eventual victors with the score 21-14. The final decided the seeding for the National Championship, with both teams qualifying to travel to San Francisco August 6th.

The Quins will compete in Pool C at the USARugby Club 7’s National Championship at Treasure Island in San Francisco. The Harlequins will face the West winner’s Woodland Exiles from Texas, the NRU #2 seed Middlesex, from the Boston area, and the South Champs Atlanta Old White.
