Pitt City vs Harlequins Pre-season Recap

Saturday was a beautiful day for rugby. The sun was shining, the stands were full of eager faces, and both teams came ready for action. The match was split into three, thirty minute periods with rolling substitutes in order to spread experience across the entire depths of both teams.

Pitt City came out firing, catching the Harlequins by surprise with a large forward pack that did not shy away from contact. But a turnover inside their attacking twenty-two meant the visiting team would not draw first blood so early. The Harlequins answered well by spreading the ball wide. The first three tries scored by the Quins were grounded on the edges of the in-goal. This made fly-half Ted Sheedy’s job of kick conversions rather difficult and paved the way for Pitt City to keep the match close through the second period.

With the score 15-14 Quins after sixty minutes, play started to open up. The Quins would dominate the final period four tries to Pitt City’s one, with stand out performances from center Timothy Sowa and Eight-man Viliami Siale. Not to mention a brilliant spot of kicking from front rower Julian Santana.

For a match designed to give both clubs a clearer picture of where they are before the regular season begins, it was a fine success. Founders Field was once again populated by sporting participants from novice to veteran, and the friends and family that came to support them. The scene in the clubhouse during the post-game social was that of a community united by their passion for the sport. We are all Pittsburghers and we love our Rugby.

Thanks to the Pittsburgh Rugby Club for coming out. The Harlequins wish you the best of luck with your upcoming season and we hope to see you soon.
