With more 130 teams now participating in the Challenge Cup playoff pathway, the competitive bar has been raised. The 4 finalists for Nationals are set with the University of Northern Colorado the only returning team. After a heart-breaking loss to the University of the Pacific in 2015, can UNC claim the title this year? All matches will be live streamed directly from our home page.

Region 1 – East Coast
With Washington & Lee looking to make a return to Nationals, a last minute score by Salem State gave the NERFU Champ a 24-22 win. W&L knocked off Belmont in the semi, while Salem State proved to much for Widener in the other semi.

Region 2 – Central
Despite the snow and cold in Elkhart, IN at the Moose Rugby Grounds, the Saturday semifinal matches were played. Three Rivers’ Pittsburgh-Johnstown edged Mid-America’s Wayne State 22-20. IUPUI – a first year club – blanked John Carroll 24-0. The final was rescheduled to April 2 as weather conditions were not favorable. The match held at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, OH was won by IUPUI 48-0.

Region 3 – West
Tarleton State – a first-year club – will represent the Lonestar Conference and take on the University of Northern Colorado from the Frontier League team on April 3 in Albuquerque, NM at the Cowboy Cup. UNC is making its second appearance in the Challenge Cup playoffs having beaten SMU in the 2015 Cowboy Cup and then finishing 2nd in Nationals losing a heartbreaker 39-32 to the University of the Pacific in the final. Tarleton State mounted a strong second half comeback but fell short losing to UNC 46-32.

Region 4 – Pacific Coast
NorCal, Gold Coast and the Northwest Conferences will be sending teams to the Region Championship in Tacoma, WA which is being hosted by the NW Conference Champ, University of Puget Sound. The University of San Francisco will represent NorCal, while Point Loma Nazarene University will represent the Gold Coast.

USF beat UPS 37 to 13, while PLNU did the same to UPS 66-10. In the final, PLNU beat USF 32-13.
