Harlequins Win Steel City 7’s Tournament

The Harlequins kicked off the summer sevens season with a tournament victory in the 4th annual Steel City 7s hosted by the Pittsburgh Rugby Club at Boyce Park. Manager Steven Hunt and Captain Michael Wilk, led the side.
The Quins started off slow against a determined Happy Valley side. A number of unforced forced errors put the Quins under pressure but they were able to pull away with a 12-12 draw. The next pool match saw the Quins face a University of Pittsburgh side who were confident after a victory over the Pitt City Clydesdales in their opening match. The Quins started putting things together offensively and played well defensively to maintain the shutout in a 10-0 victory. The Quins needed a victory in the last pool match against the Pitt City Clydesdales in order to advance to the Cup Final. The Quins used their superior pace and quickness to run around the Clydesdales to coast to a 31-5 victory. The Tournament final found the Quins facing hosts, Pitt City. The Quins started off well, sticking to the game plan, limiting City’s chances while putting them under pressure with the ball in hand, leading to a well worked try for Tom Williams, his fourth of the day. City came out quick to start the second half, scoring a try to even the score at 5-5. Jon Casile touched down late in the first overtime period, his fourth of the day. The try would be converted and the Quins would hold on to a 12-5 victory in a hard fought match. Special thanks to Host Team Pitt City for a good day of Rugby. Next up for the sevens side will be the Almost Heaven 7s in Morgantown June 19th, and the Harrisburg 7s June 26th.
