History of the Pittsburgh Harlequins1975-fischer-field-toronto

  • 1973 – Harlequins founded at University of Pittsburgh Law School – Name: Pitt Law School RFC – played first season at Trees Field behind Trees Hall, then at North Park, and then at the Police field above Pitt Stadium; John McDonald was coach
  • 1974 – Name changed to The University of Pittsburgh RFC (enter dental school), and Jean Pierre Pontier became our coach.
  • 1975 – Name changed to The Pittsburgh Royals RFC, for one season (second choice was “The Pittsburgh Pink”),
  • 1975 – Name changed to The Pittsburgh Harlequins RFC (enter all walks of life)
  • 1975 – Home field moved to McCahill Park in Fox Chapel
  • 1976 – Bermuda Tour – first “international” tour !!!
  • 1977 – combined tour with Pitt City to Ireland, Wales and England
  • 1979 – Scotland Tour (see harpoon above bar re: “Get Nessie” mantra)
  • 1980 – France, Germany Tour
  •  1984 – Bahamas Tour
  • 1984 – Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti Tour
  • 1990 – Tour to Wales and private tour of Cardiff Arms Park prior to Wales/Ireland test
  • 1994 – England, Scotland, Wales Tour
  • 1995 – Home field moved Kennard Field in Hill District
  • 1995 – Pittsburgh Harlequins Rugby Football Association, Inc. founded – 30
Harlequins donate $1,000 each for the purpose of acquiring a field:
    (1) for playing Harlequin rugby,
and (2) to create a means to generate funds for supporting youth rugby and maintaining the field.
  • 1996 – First youth program at Braddock; local Foundations provide financial support to fund the building of Founders Field and the Center for Athletic
Achievement
  • 1997 – 4 youth programs, 7 high school boys programs, 5 high school girls programs, all staffed by Harlequin volunteers
  • 1999 – Founders Field opens
  • 1999/2002 Joined Major League Rugby to coincide with MWRFU league play
  • 1999 – USARFU Sweet 16 playoff vs Old Blue (May 22, 1999)
  • 2000 – Clubhouse and lighting completed
  • 2002 – First major tournament hosted by Harlequin volunteers – USA Rugby National 
Championships
  • 2002 – Harlequins Leave Midwest to Join Mid Atlantic Division 1
  • 2002 – First MARFU game vs Maryland Exiles (Loss) Sep 14, 2002
  • 2002 – Major League Rugby Playoffs/Vegas Tour October, 2002
  • 2004 – USARFU Sweet 16 playoff vs San Mateo (Win) May 15, 2004
  • 2004 – USARFU Elite 8 playoff vs Santa Monica (Loss) May 16, 2004
  • 2014 – Pittsburgh Harlequins Childrens Charities founded
  • 2015 – Eric Jerpe becomes coach of Harlequins
