April Fools Challenge

The Second Annual April Fools Challenge will be held at 10:00am on March 30th. This 4+ mile obstacle/mud race will begin and end at Founders Field, home of Pittsburgh Harlequins Rugby.  All proceeds from the event benefit mentoring programs for at-risk youth.

The race will be launched in heats starting at 10:00am Saturday morning, with groups of racers following a winding course around the Harlequin Property, Emmerling Park, The Rachel Carson Trail, and Camp Deer Creek.

In it’s second year, “the race has been expanded”, says race director Matt Rosemeyer. “We sent out a survey after our first event last year, and the feedback was all positive.” “We received feedback that if we were going to change anything, we should make it longer, or more obstacles, or more mud, or just a harder race altogether- so we have done ALL of those things.”

The April Fools Challenge directly supports the inner-city youth mentoring programs of the Pittsburgh Harlequins- a mentoring program entering it’s 17th program year this spring. The Mentoring program uses non-contact rugby to mentor youth in Pittsburgh’s inner city neighborhoods.

“Obstacle races are a ton of fun” says returning racer David Primm. “the great part about this race is that it benefits a really worthwhile and established youth charity. Many of the races charge twice as much and don’t give back to the community.”

Obstacle racing has become more and more popular in the United States- with a few of the premier races boasting having been designed by US Special forces. The Harlequin’s April Fools Challenge is designed by rugby players- “you can decide which group might be crazier”, commented Dr. Sean Madden.

Dr. Madden helps organize the Harlequins Youth programs, and he put together a team to run the race in 2012. “We had a fantastic time, and this type of race we were happy to finish!”

Registration for the race begins January 15th, with early registration discounts ending February15th. More information is available on the race website www.AprilFoolsChallenge.com.
